Dear Community

Carla and Eira here from The Collective Wellbeing Team wishing you warmth in this beautiful but unexpectedly snowy weather.

To help beat the frost while keeping you healthy during this freezing weather we are now offering Herbal Bone Broths.  These will be available from the July order period onwards.

Why Bone Broth?
Broth is a natural mood enhancer with anti-inflammatory properties that actively heal the gut with each nourishing sip.

Broth is full of beneficial and hard to come by goodness such as collagen, gelatine, cartilage healers (natural chondroitin sulphate and glucosamine), and minerals (including calcium, potassium, and magnesium to name a few).

Because of all these compounds and minerals bone broth has been found to be nutrient dense, easy to digest and immune boosting.  And it is nice and warm for the belly!

How our broths are prepared
The broths are hand made with carefully chosen ingredients, including excellent quality pasture raised chickens from a supplier who cares very deeply for her birds.

The broth is simmered low and slow in enameled cast iron pots for a minimum of 24 hours to extract all the goodness possible from the chicken bones, herbs, and vegetables.

Eira's Herbal Bone Broths
Since beginning her journey with plant medicine, Eira has become a herbal bone broth fanatic and has come up with three varieties that use plants to add to and enhance the healing qualities of bone broth. Here is more information about each:

Mineral Broth
Nutrient dense and mineral rich broth thanks to the addition of nutritive herbs and plants such as seaweed, mushrooms, nettles, and foraged wild greens.

Digestive Broth
Full of gut healing wonder through herbs such as plantain (not the banana looking fruit), calendula and ginger which are added to the broth base.  Ginger is warming for digestion and calendula and plantain are both well known for their external and internal wound healing abilities, making them wonderful plant allies to aid with leaky gut while complimenting the healing properties of the broth.

Immune Broth
We have all heard of chicken soup being referred to as Jewish penicillin and this idea is built upon by adding immunomodulating herbs to the broth.

These herbs are known to have a supportive effect on the immune system, they are slower acting and have a more prolonged effect.

Herbs added to this broth include astragalus, Chinese red dates, turmeric and shiitake mushrooms.

Using Bone Broth
Whilst the broths are potent healing agents, they are all quite mild in flavour and can be used as you would normally use bone broth, whether drinking it neat or adding to other meals such as soups or sauces.  They are suitable and wonderful for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, as a first food for babies, as “penicillin” for those who are under the weather with a cold and as a recovery food for those who have had a stomach bug.

If you need some inspiration here are some of the ways that Eira and Carla use bone broth:
  • Just for sipping as a warm drink at any time of the day, particularly in the morning and evenings.
  • As a base for soups, stews, and sauces.
  • Boil your starches in it, such as rice, pasta, and potatoes.
  • Similarly you can cook pulses and legumes in bone broth.
  • In smoothies instead of very pricey collagen powders.
  • Use to make congee or risotto.
  • In gelatine gummies for kids.
  • Natural deglazing agent for your pan after frying a steak.
  • Hidden nutrients for your kids with a spoonful in hot chocolate or homemade ice-cream for added nutrient density. We have coined the terms “hot-brothlate ©” or “bro-llies©” for these!
  • An adrenal cocktail enhancer for a dose of collagen and gelatine.
  • Stock for your bolognaise sauce and stews.
  • As a great addition to any pates.
